'Self Portrait As Time'- Marcus Coates

For this 24 hour long video work ‘Self Portrait As Time’, by Marcus Coates, its essential that playback is automatically synced to the real time, functioning as a real clock. Custom Brightsign scheduling methods allow time synced functionality to maintain accuracy every day of the year, devised to automatically eliminate any clock time or video drift potential over extended periods of playback time. Accuracy is within 100 milliseconds at all times.

I devised an encoding and editing strategy for the large master file (originally 1 TB in size!)  for ease of use, loading and playback, maintaining highest video quality. Furthermore I custom programmed a Remote Control specifically for the work, allowing options to set the ‘Video Time’ of the work manually on first installation and for correcting unexpected power loss situations – using customized Brightauthor Plugins – including super fast, and super slow Forward and Rewind speeds available at the touch of a button, and ‘jump to a specific hour of the day’ controls as standard.

Marcus Coates can be found here. Self Portrait As Time was featured most recently in the Somerset House exhibition 24/7, London, 2020.
